| Skating fever sweeps South Yorkshire | Skating fever sweeps South Yorkshire As ITV tops the ratings with its latest reality show, Sheffield’s state-of-the-art ice venue is enjoying the benefits as skating fever sweeps the city.
An audience of over nine million is tuning into Dancing on Ice every Sunday evening, resulting in a boom in visitors to iceSheffield since the start of the show (13 January). In the last three weeks, attendances at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV) facility have doubled with the Saturday and Sunday afternoon skate sessions reaching capacity. Local skaters are keen to follow in the footsteps of celebrities such as tennis star Greg Rusedski, singer Gareth Gates and cleaning guru Aggie Mackenzie, who are among the contestants competing in Dancing on Ice. Peter Morrissey, ice development manager at iceSheffield, which is managed by SIV, said: “It’s astonishing how visitor numbers have shot up at iceSheffield since the show started last month. Dancing on Ice is turning the region into a bunch of professional ice skating wannabes! “Seeing the celebrities perform specially choreographed routines is giving the public inspiration to get their skates on and more and more people are realising that ice skating can be fun and easy, even for a complete novice. Local people are having a go at all the activities, from family skating sessions to the more ambitious dance on ice lessons!” Family skating sessions take place every Saturday and Sunday morning from 10.30am -12.30pm.
