| Sheffield skaters in synch for national championships | Sheffield skaters in synch for national championships Sheffield’s top synchronized skaters will be going for gold at a prestigious national championship in the city this month. Two teams from iceSheffield will compete in the British RJS Synchronized Skating Championship on Monday 24 March. The event is being held at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV) facility for the third year running and will feature a record 30 teams and 450 competitors from across the UK. Competitors will perform in juvenile, elementary, intermediate, senior and adult categories. Synchronized skating teams are made up of between 15 and 20 performers on the ice at one time moving as one flowing unit at high speeds. The team performs a program set to music, with required formations including circles, lines, blocks, wheels, and intersections. Peter Morrissey, ice development manager at iceSheffield, said: “It is a privilege to be hosting this event for the third time and it is wonderful that iceSheffield will be represented by two local teams. “Our coaches Amanda Hembrow and John Horne have been working really hard on the routines and hopefully we can make home advantage count and come out with a medal or two! “Synchronized skating is a highly specialised sport and involves skating teams flowing in unison. Each individual skater must be competent at a variety of skating skills such as speed, footwork and ice presence.” The competition starts at 2.30pm and concludes with presentations at 7pm.
