Novice skaters in synch at national championships
Novice skaters in synch at national championships A novice synchronized skating team from Sheffield marked its first ever competitive performance with a top five finish at a prestigious national championship event.

iceSheffield’s junior team called Unum, which was only formed last month, secured fifth place in the elementary category at the British RJS Synchronized Skating Championship. The event, which attracted a record-breaking 32 teams and 439 competitors from across the UK, was held at iceSheffield for the third year running on Monday 24 March. Competitors performed a program set to music, with required formations including circles, lines, blocks, wheels, and intersections in a range of categories including juvenile, elementary, intermediate, senior and adult.

Perpetuam, another of iceSheffield’s newly established teams, produced an impressive display to finish in tenth position in the elementary section. iceSheffield’s team also picked up an award for the best competition ‘block’ sequence – which features a least two lengths of the rink and simple footwork. Synchronized skating teams are made up of between 15 and 20 performers on the ice at one time moving as one flowing unit at high speeds.

Peter Morrissey, ice development manager at iceSheffield, said: “This is wonderful achievement by both our teams but particularly when you consider that they only started skating together last month and have had just seven weeks of synchronized training. “Neither expected to finish in such high positions and we are really proud of them all. Our coaches Amanda Hembrow and John Horne worked very hard to develop the routines and deserve a tremendous amount of praise for their achievements.

The event was a wonderful occasion and the atmosphere was more like a hockey match than a skating competition! We had a packed crowd throughout the day with parents, coaches and friends all cheering on the skaters.”
