iceSheffield shortlisted for top sports award
Vote for us! That’s the message going out to
Sheffield
today after one of the city’s leading leisure venues was nominated for a prestigious national award.
iceSheffield has been shortlisted with nine others in the sport category of The National Lottery Awards 2007 – designed to find the
UK
’s favorite Lottery funded projects.
The awards celebrate the difference that these projects have made to people, places and communities all across the
UK
and recognise the hard work and dedication of those involved in running Lottery funded projects.
Steve Brailey, Chief Executive of Sheffield International Venues, who manage the facility, said: “We are delighted to have been nominated for a National Lottery Award. It not only recognises the success and achievements of our team at iceSheffield but it is also great news for
Sheffield
and further enhances the city’s reputation as a centre of excellence for sport.
“Now we want people in the city and beyond to tell the rest of the country how good we are by voting for us.”
iceSheffield, which was awarded £908,313 of Lottery funding, opened in the Attercliffe area of the city in May 2003. The £15.7 million development is a joint project between Sheffield International Venues (SIV), Sheffield City Trust and Sport England.
The state-of-the-art venue boasts two Olympic sized ice pads, which can be boarded over for dry events, a dance studio, gymnasium, changing facilities, restaurant, café and a conference suite.
It provides a mixed programme of activities for both recreational and elite skaters and is also home to Sheffield’s prestigious
Ice
Academy
encouraging the development of elite skaters of the future.
iceSheffield recently welcomed its one millionth visitor and is The National Centre of Excellence for figure skating and ice dance and The National Centre of Excellence for ice hockey
Steve added: “iceSheffield was established to provide ice sports facilities for the region and increase recognition of ice sports both nationally and internationally, and that is exactly what we have achieved.
“It provides exceptional facilities for professional skaters whilst also increasing public awareness of healthy living through sports and recreation. Ice sports are a fun to keep fit and iceSheffield has attracted and encouraged thousands of families and teenagers to exercise contributing to the city’s objectives to get more people more active and reduce childhood obesity levels.”
iceSheffield is up against sporting venues from across the
UK
including Shotwick Lake Sailing, Norfolk Ski Club and Haldon Forest Park.
The Sheffield Winter Garden has also been shortlisted for a National Lottery Award in the Best Environment Project category.
