Ice stars secure British Championship qualification
A team of seven Sheffield-based ice skaters have secured qualification for the British Senior Championships in 2008. iceSheffield’s Karla Quinn produced two fantastic performances at the Welsh IJS Competition, in Deeside, this week (November 20 and 21) to become the British Senior Ladies Qualifier and win her first senior gold medal. She scored a personal best overall to guarantee a place at the British Senior Championships in January 2008 and now has a dilemma of whether to compete in the British Junior or Senior category.
Andrew Smykowski and Kira Geil and Mark Hanretty and Chrissy Chitwood, who are also based a iceSheffield’s International Skating Academy of Excellence, qualified in the senior dance category along with Sophie Kent in the Novice Ladies and Katie Powell in the Junior ladies.
Peter Hallam missed narrowly missed out on making the British Championships but came second in the qualifying competition in Deeside.
“To have seven academy skaters representing iceSheffield at the British Championships is a real success story and it will be a proud occasion for not only for our venue but the city as a whole. “Many of these skaters moved to Sheffield to train alongside top skaters from all over the country in first class surroundings. We have a great motivational atmosphere at iceSheffield and it is wonderful to be celebrating this latest success.”
