Sheffield skaters go for gold at British Championships

A team of six Sheffield-based ice skaters will be hoping to make home advantage count when they compete in the 2008 British Ice Figure and Synchronized Skating Championships.

Karla Quinn, Andrew Smykowski, Kira Geil, Mark Hanretty, Chrissy Chitwood and Sophie Kent have all qualified for the event, which is being hosted at their training base – iceSheffield – from 8 – 12 January.

In the senior dance category, iceSheffield Academy skating couples Andrew Smykowski and Kira Geil and Mark Hanretty and Chrissy Chitwood will perform the Yankee Polka. They will be up against four-time British Ice Dance champions Sinead and John Kerr from Scotland.

The Kerrs, who last competed at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV) facility in 2005, came fifth at this year’s European Championships and represented Great Britain at the 2006 Olympics in Italy, finishing tenth.

In the novice ladies category, iceSheffield will be represented by Sophie Kent, who will perform the Rocker Foxtrot and Paso Doble, while Karla Quinn will perform the Viennese Waltz in the junior ladies section of the competition.

Mandy Janes, general manager at iceSheffield, said: “We are very proud for all our skaters who have qualified for the Championships and it is fantastic that iceSheffield’s International Academy of Excellence will be so well represented.

“It will be a great opportunity for them to compete alongside other leading skaters from across the country and shine in front of a home crowd at iceSheffield.”

National governing body – NISA (National Ice Skating Association) has also awarded the British RJS Synchronized Skating Championships to iceSheffield on March 24 followed by the British Solo Ice Dance Championships from July 1 – 3.

All three events have been brought to the city by Sheffield City Council’s Major Sports Events Unit (MSEU), in partnership with SIV and NISA.
