| Sheffield skate star takes British title |
Sheffield-based skater Karla Quinn is celebrating after taking the British Junior Ice Skating title at her home rink.
The 19 year old secured gold at the 2008 British Ice Figure and Synchronized Skating Championships held at iceSheffield from 8 – 12 January.
Karla moved to the city from Ballymoney, Northern Ireland, in February 2007 to join iceSheffield’s International Skating Academy of Excellence.
It means she has now won three British titles after being crowned Novice champion in 2001 and Primary champion in 2003.
In the senior dance category, which was won by Sinead and John Kerr, iceSheffield’s Christina Chitwood and Mark Hanretty bagged bronze, while local skaters Andrew Smykowski and Kira Geil finished fifth. Also representing iceSheffield was Sophie Kent, who came 12th in the novice ladies.
Peter Morrissey, ice development manager for iceSheffield, which is managed by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), said: “This is a great start to the year for our skaters. They were up against some very tough competition but home advantage certainly had a positive impact and we are really proud of all their performances.
“It was wonderful to have such a strong local representation at the event and I’m sure it will have provided all our skaters with excellent competition experience.”
The event was the first of three British Championship events to be held at iceSheffield in 2008. National governing body – NISA (National Ice Skating Association) has also awarded the British RJS Synchronized Skating Championships to iceSheffield on 24 March followed by the British Solo Ice Dance Championships from 1 – 3 July.
All three events have been brought to the city by Sheffield City Council’s Major Sports Events Unit (MSEU), in partnership with SIV and NISA. |
