Sheffield’s Katie Powell was one of the future stars of GB figure skating who took part in an Olympic training camp for talented young athletes.
Four junior skaters were selected to complete the six-day Generation 2018 Multi-Sport Training Camp at St Mary’s University College, in Twickenham.
Katie, who skates at iceSheffield, British Junior Pairs Champions James Hunt and Catherine Clement, from Chelmsford, and Bradford’s Daniel King, were among the 22 athletes picked by the British Olympic Association (BOA).
Run in conjunction with the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, they covered a range of practical and theoretical sessions from fitness and physiological testing to injury prevention and the principles of winning.
The athletes, who were drawn from range of winter sports including bobsleigh, curling and ice hockey, also heard from Sir Clive Woodward on training for Olympic success.
Keith Horton, chief executive of the National Ice Skating Association (NISA), which is the body responsible for the development of the sport throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland, said: “It was fantastic to have such a strong NISA representation at this prestigious camp. To be selected by the BOA was a real honour for these skaters and they will have got so much out of it, both in terms of training techniques and dealing mentally with preparations for an Olympic Games, which is so key to success.”
