A group of novice ice performers are proving it’s never too late to get your skates on.

iceSheffield has launched new skating sessions dedicated to people over the age of 50.

The sessions, which will be held every Monday, are designed to encourage people to keep fit through ice skating, as well as providing them with a chance to socialise in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

John Verney, 72, who has been travelling 500 miles a week from his home in North Hykeham near Lincoln to attend lessons at the Sheffield International Venues Managed (SIV) facility for the past four years, helped launch the new sessions.

He said: “Coming to these sessions at iceSheffield is a great opportunity to socialise with people of a similar age, as well as keeping fit and healthy.”

John almost gave up skating when his wife died five years ago, but friends encouraged him to continue and he turned what was a casual pastime into a way of life.

John added: “The launch was fantastic and I know that everyone else who attended was thrilled that iceSheffield have created this specifically for people of a certain age. It means that we do not have to be shown up by all the young experienced skaters!”

The retired draftsman, who suffers from angina, does not let his heart condition get in the way of enjoying his senior years, and he regularly takes to the rink at iceSheffield with coach Nancy Ambler.

Peter Morrissey, ice development manager at iceSheffield, said: “These sessions are a new initiative for us and we wanted to create an opportunity for people over the age of 50 to come to the rink and enjoy a leisurely skate alongside the chance to socialise in Core_Bar Restaurant.

“The sessions are designed both for experienced skaters as well as those who are just starting out. We are also hoping to introduce a coach so that those who attend are able to receive training from a fully qualified coach to not only learn new skills, but to increase their confidence on the ice.”

The sessions take place on every Monday from 10:30am until 12:30pm. For more information call on iceSheffield call 0114 223 3900.
