Winter Olympic gold medalist Rhona Martin will skate into Sheffield this weekend to launch a new series of Saturday night curling sessions.
The 43-year-old will be at iceSheffield, in Attercliffe, on Saturday, August 7 at 7.30pm for the first of the new public pay as you go curling sessions.
Rhona will host a coaching session for beginners and then take part in a short game with those lucky enough to attend on the night.
Rhona, who was a BBC pundit at this year's Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, became a national treasure in 2002 when she led her all-Scottish team to Olympic gold for Great Britain.
She famously released the stone of destiny to win gold at the Salt Lake City Games.
Mandy Parker, general manager at iceSheffield, which is operated by Sheffield International Venues, said: “It is an honour to welcome such a Winter Olympic legend to iceSheffield for the launch of our new Saturday night curling sessions.
“Curling is a unique and entertaining game and a great way to keep fit and healthy or enjoy as a competitive sport.
“We started daytime curling sessions in February this year to coincide with the Winter Olympics and they were a huge success. These Saturday night sessions will make the sport even more accessible to local people and can be enjoyed in the same way that a family might go bowling.”
The game involves careful strategy to decide where to send the stone along the ice and get it closest to the centre of the house.
Curlers play in warm, loose fitting clothes, gloves and a hat, and rubber soled shoes
Mandy added: “Curling at iceSheffield provides an opportunity for people to have fun, socialise, compete, meet new friends, and improve physical and mental agility. And one of the best aspects of the game at iceSheffield is that it is really affordable.
“It is also a fantastic team game because everyone has to work together to win. All ages can play an active role in curling and it is easy to learn, even if you are not used to activities on the ice.”
The sessions take place every Saturday night and cost £3.50 per person.
Places are limited for the first session with Rhona Martin so please book in advance. For more information or to book please contact reception on 0114 223 3900.
